Dear All,

again, my friend's sword and (bad) pictures. This time the sword is an unsigned naginata naoshi with the following measurements:

Nagasa: 49.2cm

Sori: 1.2cm

Motohaba: 2.8cm

Kasane: 0.5cm

This time I have my own opinon regarding this sword (not worth much, but still). If you wish, I can post a spoiler here, but I am asking for your unbiased opinion.

Many thanks for looking

Hi Mariusz

with the strong sunagashi my first reaction was Shikkake. However I cant see the boshi clearly and what I can see lacks the "old mans beard" lines of nie running from it which is a give away for that school. The strong nie and flowing hamon might make Shizu worth comparison.

in the absense of a better idea I would go Yamato, Tegai (simply because they were the most prolific) or as you mention a Kanebo school work. But it could equally be one of the other Yamato influenced schools.

not much help but amongst this lot the answer may lurk :(

Chris, Paul,

thanks for the ideas. Of course I know how difficult it is to try to attribute a blade with (low quality) pictures only...

As to shape - do you think Nambokucho/early Muromachi is a good call?

Mariusz,

Not sure the usual katana sugata/shape dating system can be used on a naganaki.

I suspect they didn't follow the usual sword shapes, or curvature rules.

Just guessing here though.

It has Yamato traits as you mention, but not what I would think of as pure Yamato. In addition, the jigane is not as refined. Kanebo also is known for their pole arms. I would think later Muromachi. Just my off the cuff guess from the photos.

I'll say sue Muromachi

Apart from Darcy's naginata naoshi, what makes you think late Muromachi Jean? Hada? Hamon?

Not that I disagree, of course :)

Chris,

thank you, that sounds pretty logical :-) I was thinking (ko)Uda, a prolific Yamato offshoot...

Seems a bit too "yamato" for Uda....

not wanting to answer for Chris or Jean but Ko-Uda work I have seen has much finer hada, it looks better and has a prolific amount of jinie which I dont see in this. Having said that I have only seen a few in hand and there was considerable variation even within that small sample.
