Barrie B Posted September 17, 2013 Report Posted September 17, 2013 Hi, I recently purchased a kogai that I believe to be Yoshioka School, but I do not know how the mei is read and none of these match any of the mei in Haynes. Does anyone know please? I think these kanji can be read as: 保 Hou, Mori, Tamotsu, Yasu; and 誠 Aki, Makoto, Masa, Moto and Shige. IS it Yasushige, Yasumasa or Morimoto?? Does anyone know please? Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you. Barrie. Quote
John A Stuart Posted September 17, 2013 Report Posted September 17, 2013 I can't read the mei from your picture, but, if you have copied the kanji right 保誠 it may be Yasunobu of Mito, Hitachi prov. student of Nukagawa Yasunori, died c.1800 can be read as Yasuaki or Hosei. John Quote
Barrie B Posted September 17, 2013 Author Report Posted September 17, 2013 Hi John, Yes, sorry.. its a brand new computer (Mac) and I am still taming it.. has a mind of its own at the moment.. Not sure why all the photos reduced in size... ?? Thanks for that though... Yasunobu H 11218.0 does seem to be the most likely.. If I can sort the photos out, I will repost again - tomorrow night probably.. Thank you. Barrie. Quote
Barrie B Posted September 18, 2013 Author Report Posted September 18, 2013 I have now attached some better photos. Thanks. Barrie. Quote
Ludolf Richter Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 I have him in my database, but I can't remember from which source I took the picture and the text: Yasumasa from Mino/Hitach,Haynes H 11174 (there with a different 2nd Kanji),student of Nukagawa Yasunori ( H 11237).Ludolf Quote
John A Stuart Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 Could be read as Yasumasa as well. Which is more correct I wonder? John Quote
Barrie B Posted September 18, 2013 Author Report Posted September 18, 2013 Hi Ludolf, I do not think it is Yasumasa, unless he used diffent kanji to sign throughout his career; not unheard of.. Is the Kao the same? From the unusual Kanji combo, Yasunobu (H 11218.0) seems to be the best match in Haynes.. My reference books are limited. Barrie. Quote
kaigunair Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 Definitely was one I considered. Nice pick up. Quote
Ludolf Richter Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 I had just checked the Tosogo-Mei-Bible: Iida & Wakayama,KINKO JITEN.There is no entry with this Kanji-combination.I believe in the author of the Japanese booklet,I had used to scan the pic for my database, who has stated that the artist was Yasumasa from Mito/Hitachi.He must have had prior knowledge to come for this solution.Although the quality of my pic is not good, both Mei+Kao seems to be nearly identical.Look at the new pic.Ludolf Quote
Barrie B Posted September 24, 2013 Author Report Posted September 24, 2013 Ludolf, Thanks for your input, but I am confused... I can't see your scanned Mei and Kao, but believe you when you say they are the same. Do you think Haynes has the same artist recorded twice...? Are we saying that Yasumasa (H 11174) and Yasunobu (H 11218) are in fact the same artist..? Both are from Mito in Hitachi province ca.1800... Barrie. Quote
