What is this koshirae style called?

Hi,

I'm sorry I do not have any pictures. But I hope my description is clear enough.

I've seen some katana that have very small tsuba, almost tanto sized tsuba. They are only a little larger than the fuchi and koiguchi. I'm not talking about aikuchi koshirae.

Only example that comes to mind right now: If anyone watches the "Yae no Sakura" Drama, Saigo's katana is like that I think.

What is this koshirae style called (if it is one) and does it have a special purpose?

Thanks.

Good morning all,

Ref to Yae no Sakura; if I remember correctly, there is a thread or comment stating that during the Bakumatsu, it became quite a fashion to mount small tsuba on katana to show lack of fear etc.

Cheers

Seems like those bushi should have gotten tsuba's with the wheel & mantis themes!
