tony edmunds Posted May 9, 2013 Report Posted May 9, 2013 Hi Guys I've had this tsuba for a while now and I still haven't discoverd the exact name for the form. Is it, rounded Mokko or something else entirely? Your learned opnions swould be very welcome. Regards Tony Quote
Soshin Posted May 9, 2013 Report Posted May 9, 2013 Hi Tony, I think it is a variant of the mokko shape. Some times the term "kawari mokko gata" is used. This just means strange mokko shape in Japanese. Yours truly, David Stiles Quote
tony edmunds Posted May 9, 2013 Author Report Posted May 9, 2013 Hi David Strange mokko, how Japanese is that? Thanks Tony Quote
Chibi Posted May 9, 2013 Report Posted May 9, 2013 I don't think "strange" is a good translation for kawari. It would be better described as irregular, substitute, variation, alteration, changed or modified. Quote
Akitombo Posted May 9, 2013 Report Posted May 9, 2013 Tony I think this would be Nade mokko gata Regards David Quote
tony edmunds Posted May 9, 2013 Author Report Posted May 9, 2013 Thanks all I'm glad to see opinions vary on this one.I haven't found an identical shape in any of my (admittedly limited) books. Does anyone have any idea of school or age, the plate appears to be good quality iron to my untrained eye. Regards Tony Quote
Soshin Posted May 10, 2013 Report Posted May 10, 2013 Hi Tony, These plain thick iron plate tsuba that are like yours are often categorized into the large Tosho tsuba group of the mid to late Edo Period. I will leave you to translate what a "Tosho tsuba" is. Alternatively check my website or the articles section of the forum. PS. Thanks for correcting my English translation of the Japanese word "kawari". Yours truly, David Stiles Quote
