lotus Posted January 26, 2013 Report Posted January 26, 2013 Having difficulty identifying the school for this papered tsuba. Not sure if I am looking in the correct location for the kanji. In this case, the bottom right 4 symbols? Might be my mistake. Can anyone read the school attribution? And show me which symbols you read to do it. Thanks! Quote
MauroP Posted January 26, 2013 Report Posted January 26, 2013 Hi Patrick, I'm unable to read properly all the sosho kanji, but my guess is Hōan School (法安). See Markus Sesko Genealogies of Japanese Tsuba and Tôsô-Kinkô Artists p. 99. Quote
lotus Posted January 27, 2013 Author Report Posted January 27, 2013 Thanks, those first 2 symbols tripped me up! Quote
John A Stuart Posted January 27, 2013 Report Posted January 27, 2013 You get that they are the area? Unshu, Hiroshima. John Quote
John A Stuart Posted January 27, 2013 Report Posted January 27, 2013 I know it can be read Gei, but had always seen the romaji as Un in the case of 芸州 or Geishu for 藝州 as in Aki 安藝 Either way is correct I think Chris, and is still Hiroshima now. John Quote
cabowen Posted January 27, 2013 Report Posted January 27, 2013 I've always seen it pronounced Geishu but yes, Hiroshima area..... Quote
lotus Posted January 28, 2013 Author Report Posted January 28, 2013 When I plugged in those 2 symbols in a translator, I got "art state" so I assumed it had something to do with location. Quote
lotus Posted January 28, 2013 Author Report Posted January 28, 2013 Also, after reading up on Hoan, I wonder why that attribution? Seems a bit thick and lacking of acid etching. I would say Akasaka but cuts aren't sharp enough, ko or kyo shoami? Just not sure what traits led to Hoan though I think I read they liked the cherry blossom / raft theme. Quote
