I remember hearing that the NBTHK Hozon is more strict then the NTHK Shintesho paper requirements. I also remember hearing that for a tosogu to receive Tokubetsu Hozon papers it must be a exceptional example of the school or artist work in excellent condition. The NBTHK English website is a bit vague in this regard. Kunitaro-sama when you have some free time could you translate the tosogu hozon and tokubetsu hozon sections? Alternatively if someone else has already done a translation of this posting it or a link to the English translation would be very helpful and would prevent Kunitaro-sama from wasting his time. Once a partial translation is complete we can submit it to the NBTHK to list on their English website. I am suggesting this as I am a member of the American Branch of the NBTHK. Jean Posted January 20, 2013 Author Report Posted January 20, 2013 David, In fact, I have an unsigned mint papered hozon Mito tsuba (tanto sized) and wonder if it could qualified to TH. As there is no translation of TH requirement for tosogu, I would have liked to see the TH criteria. So, I would be gratefull if someone could translate the TH requirements. When I have ime his week, I will take some pictures of this tsuba and post them. Quote
Curran Posted January 20, 2013 Report Posted January 20, 2013 Send a picture, and I would give my opinion. I've never had anything fail Tokubetsu Hozon shinsa. I am a little hard ass judge on such things. For Mito school, unsigned, it would probably need to be top quality. If the small black shakudo basket weave one with two tone clematis vine, then I would say 65-70% chance of pass. If it had a signature, then a definite pass. But, does it justify expense? TH adds significant expense. My own feeling is that than papers should represent no more than 30% of value. Cost of tosogu papers has climbed 75% in the last decade years. For me, something must be 'boreline' Juyo to bother with Tokubetsu Hozon now. I Google translated Kunitaro-san's post and did some spot translations. I have a tsuba I think deserves Juyo, but hesitant to bother. The translation makes me think maybe I should submit my favorite koshirae too. I had intended to wait 5 to 10 more years, since it is a late Edo piece. Quote

I always want to see nice examples even if you don't submit it to NBTHK tokubetsu hozon shinsa. I only have one tsuba in my collection currently that I would consider for a tokubetsu hozon NBTHK shinsa submission. My decision is based in part upon other peoples feedback about it. My own research was favorable comparing it to papered examples the NBTHK had in their monthly magazine when they covered Namban tsuba recently. I very much like it and would consider it an exceptional example of the Mito school craftsmanship in excellent condition. :D What are the measurements of the tanto tsuba? I can imagine looking at this tsuba in hand is even better when considering the small size of the plate.
