kaigunair Posted January 13, 2013 Report Posted January 13, 2013 Just got the Hayens index and finding it very helpful. I thankfully have both the hardcopy and CD version. I was wondering if anyone had been able to use the adobe search function for Japanese kanji characters? I'm thinking that in the adobe version, the Japanese characters aren't coded as text but as images.... Quote
Soshin Posted January 13, 2013 Report Posted January 13, 2013 Hi Junichi-san, I only have the print version of that great book therefore I can't answer your question. Yours truly, David Stiles Quote

yogoro Posted January 13, 2013 Report Posted January 13, 2013 Hi Junichi ,if you type or paste the right kanji characters , for example Ito 伊藤 But you not always get the appropriate kanji for this pdf. Mikolaj Quote
kaigunair Posted January 14, 2013 Author Report Posted January 14, 2013 Mikolaj, Looks like adobe professional has some additional functionalities. I'm working with reader right now, and it doesn't seem to work for me. I think my work offers a discount for adobe professional, so that may be the way to go. Thanks everyone for the input! -Junichi Quote
John A Stuart Posted January 14, 2013 Report Posted January 14, 2013 Maybe work will let you use it's program. It cost me a fair penny. John Quote
Shimazu Posted January 14, 2013 Report Posted January 14, 2013 I have been frustrated by this for years. I use Acrobat Pro on a Win 7 computer, and you CAN search by kanji in several of the Haynes pdf files, generally the ones in the first third of the alphabet (I can list them If anybody wants). It would seem that some of the files were saved in a pdf format that included the kanji, in font form, but the majority were not. Also, if you want to search for words that include a macron (long vowel mark), you need to cut and paste the character from the pdf into the search box, at least I haven’t found another way to do this on a Windows machine. It would be fantastic to be able to search the entire “Haynes Index” by kanji. Perhaps someone who knows Bob well could discuss this with him to see if there is any possibility that the publisher might be willing to create a ‘kanji searchable’ set of files. I did talk to Bob about this several years ago, but I am not sure I was able to clearly explain the problem to him. I don’t believe that he is a computer user. Quote
