Klop Posted December 23, 2012 Report Posted December 23, 2012 Hi all, I recently acquired this shibuichi tsuba, size 6,75 x 6 cm thickness 4,5 mm. A friend provided me with input that the Kao looks like Yasuchika Tsuchiya, see printscreen from his book. To my eye the work looks delicate, individual chisel marks in the leaves etc can be seen. But I have no idea if this is truly the work of the artist mentioned. In short, I don't know what I bought Usually not a smart move but I couldn't resist the offer. Any opinions on age and Kao/ artist are most welcome! Thanks, and merry christmas, Eric K. Quote
Pete Klein Posted December 23, 2012 Report Posted December 23, 2012 Hi Eric - Here is a scan of Wakayama I, pg. 201 (Toso Kodogu Meiji Taikei three book set) which shows four examples of this type kao: Looking carefully you can see these are different in execution from your example. I did some research in several Yasuchika references I have and there were no examples of tsuba with only this kao. All tsuba were signed either Yasuchika or Tou, his nyudo name. There is also the issue that this workmanship is simply not good enough to be by the hand of Yasuchika, who is 'Meihin Saku', or Highest Maker status. Here is an example of his work: I hope this helps. Quote
Klop Posted December 23, 2012 Author Report Posted December 23, 2012 Hi Pete, Thanks for your detailed information, it sure helps! Now I know I have a nice-looking plate which is gimei. Fortunately it wasn't expensive so no loss there. Kind regards, Eric K. Quote
Brian Posted December 23, 2012 Report Posted December 23, 2012 Eric, Nice tsuba. Not even close to what you would see from Yasuchika, but a bit of tidy work nonetheless. I would ask an expert what the finish is supposed to look like, since it doesn't appear to have the original patina left. But it might look very good once restored. Yasuchika...like Goto work, you would immediately know it, without having to ask. Your one was for a yoroi-doshi I expect. Brian Quote
Soshin Posted December 23, 2012 Report Posted December 23, 2012 Hi Brian R., Thanks for posting a photo of one of my favorite tsuba. The fine detail and expression on the face of the Buddhist Monk and tiger is just wonderful. Yours truly, David Stiles Quote
