A question for Shinshinto collectors
Tohagi replied to Natichu's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
An interesting point in Masahide revival of sword tradition was that shinto sword were not trustable anymore in fight. He broke à lot of them to make this point clear ... and that was the starting point of shinshinto era. -
Need your expertise on wakizashi.
Tohagi replied to Nazar's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
Tachibana Yasuhiro (from kyoto yamashiro) is quite a big name. Even without seeing the meï I really do not think this waki worth that money. You've been smart to take an advice here ! Best, Eric -
Any idea what time period this could be from ?
Tohagi replied to klee's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
You may submit it at NTHK USA for a first appreasal? -
Hello, Much collectors prizes NBTHK as sure and relevant, many don't trust NTHK NPO above a certain price level. If you think it could go tokubetsu or juyo, submit it for shinza, If you don't then let it be... Best, Eric

Bishu Osafune Sukesada - August 1581
Tohagi replied to Bosco's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
Yes, a very fine and difficult Togi work. Very natural, very impressive, a lot of contrast in hada and hamon without the usal "too much sharp/ rough" effect. -

A question for Shinshinto collectors
Tohagi replied to Natichu's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion

Motokasane: how important for structural integrity?
Tohagi replied to jdawg221's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
Hello, One way to spot if yhe blade is been "over polished" is if a polishing bolt appeard just after the habaki at the begining of the ubu nakago where the blade may be thicker than at the moto. For example motokasane 6mm and "boltkasane" 6,5 or 7mm. The delta is missing steel. If you have shallow or no bolt, the blade was probably intended like that. -

Transition from koto to shinto periods
Tohagi replied to Mikaveli's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
Transitions periods are very interesting to study: for example, I have a Mihara sword from Momoyama tensho wich shows all the caracteristics of Kanbun Shinto and even integrating mino influence in hamon... Mihara is usualy very conservative yamato-den... and disapered in shinto. Best, Eric -

Transition from koto to shinto periods
Tohagi replied to Mikaveli's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
Hello, I remember reading many year ago, a 1870 Test. I think it was called "Nihonto performance lesser with cool water". Something like that. They test more than 20 blades, some koto blades too until bending or breaking... I also remember Masahide did the same at his time and had it registred. Just my two cents. Eric -
The meï is quite skilled compared to the kamon... Any known Sukesada who use this? Maybe late addition?
-
Hello Sebuh, Very welcome, you'll probably find out that we are passionated and vrey young in spirit ! Have fun! Eric

Which would you get? Mei or Mumei
Tohagi replied to RichardY's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
I would take the risk and buy the one you love more... the Raï. It never has been rational to collect swords. It's time to assume that. You will never regret to buy what you really like Vs what logic is telling to you... Best, Eric -
Help with information katanas in ireland.
Tohagi replied to jason c's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
@jason c,Hello, My advice, buy within EU to professionnal dealer, ask for antiques certificate and clear invoice for customs process. Choose carefully the post service and add air tagg in it. The best should be Japanese paper (NBTHK, NTHK) with translation (looks very official). Easyest way, buy in République of Ireland. Best regards, Eric
