TV documentary about a bring back Shin Gunto
Banton989 replied to Banton989's topic in Military Swords of Japan
Very true, bit harrowing in places after I watched all of it. It's a shame they didn't go a bit more into the sword itself, bit of a missed opportunity. Found myself telling the lady on tv off for touching the blade too! 🤣 -
Just watching a TV documentary called "A Doctors Sword" It's about the family of a deceased veteran looking for information on a gunto given to their father by a Japanese officer at the end of WW2. They travel to Japan to try and find more about the sword and it's original owner. Not a bad watch. Adam

Oof, that's been through the wars.... what a great piece of history frozen in time though.

Ah that was you Trystan! Thankyou for that 😁. I thought it may be someone on here. Will see what else I can find.

松山水交社? Is what I think it is so far.

Hi all, Nice little inscription on a Kai-Gunto tsuka, I've read the top 5 kanji as Matsuyama Suikosha (Matsuyama Navy Officer Club) can anyone help with the final bottom one please? Thanks in advance Adam

Ah that would be unfortunate as I pulled the trigger on it 🙃. What are the tells?

Hi all, Spotted this Navy tassel with an almost golden coloured knot on it, any thoughts on it? I can't find any reference, replacement, embelleshment etc? Thanks in advance, Adam

Thanks Alex, what else would need to match menuki? What would your guestimate be on the blade & koshirae age?

So I'm very new to collecting, only have a type 95 gunto so far (sorry bear with me!) Lol. Happened to wander into a local antique shop today and found a genuine Daisho! Umfortunatly in poor condition, with a fake signature on the katana too, but were great to see!

Bloody love this advice thankyou, I do tend to jump into things. I'm trying to learn as much as I can, I think I have read every post in the Military Sword section on here so far lol. Yes WW2 era is my main interest, the bug has bitten. Thank you all for putting up with a newbie, and thank you all for your help and guidance so far 🙏.

You are right. I'd ideally like a normal shingunto. I shall learn patience!

Thanks, will try a WTB, might go to the show at the motorcycle museum next month too. That one I posted above was on JCmilitaria

That is a very fair point, apologies for my newness to the whole thing. In England where I live the choice of items to buy is a lot less, our Ebay for example dosen't allow edged weapons. I would much prefer to buy something I know more about. Perhaps a WTB post on this forum would be the better way to go. Thankyou all for your help and patience so far. Adam

Back to the drawing board! Lol. Does this one look more interesting? Unsigned but with 2 mons, 53.5cm cutting edge, wakazashi in gunto mounts?

Hi all, After buying a Type 95 I have caught the bug! Looking to buy a Type 94 or 98 next. These are the ones on offer to me, I have run them past Bruce already. No other pics unfortunately, what do you think/what would you pick? Any help appreciated! Adam

1st Pattern Aluminiun Tsuka Type 95
Banton989 replied to Banton989's topic in Military Swords of Japan
It's 1200 for the month on average isn't it? 24,000 for 1941. I think the number for these is way lower than that though. Production must have ramped up as plans progressed for war? -

9811 I would count, 10506 is another sub variant I think where they adjusted the ito. Mines 8650 so thats 1161 possible so far? Will do more digging for examples.
