  1. Hi, Thanks John for those valuable comments ,the 5k was about the max I was willing to spend, do the US dealers have no problem then shipping to the uk, as some from the US don't like sending things here. Mark
  2. Hi, looking at the on forum dealer pages must admit I'm very tempted by one sword from the US ,but rather scared to do it ,have imported various things over the years and anything from the USA always seems to get slaughtered by customs? What cost am I looking at by the time a sword gets here per £1000 spent and is it the same from wherever they come from, Mark
  3. Hi, John a couple of questions for yours it easy and safe to import swords from Japan had been looking at some on samuraistore.com , do you just order pay they arrive in the uk and then pay the charges. what sort of costs would I be looking at to import a sword say for instance I was to spend 5k on a sword what would the final bill be,then I could work it out either ways it a fixed amount per pound? Also I see some swords from Japan come with no papers is there a reason some do and some don't is it because if they were submitted they would not pass or some other reason. Thanks for any help mark
  4. Hi, could the un uniformity of the tang rust be due to the machi being moved when it was shortened so that part at the tang was not rusted and the original part of the tang was already rusted so as it all carried on rusting it never catches up? measurements are nagasa=15.5in nakago=4in sori= 3/8th in must admit I'm not to. keen on the tuba either . Mark

  8. Hi, Didn't mean original fittings back to when the blade was made just fittings that it was last mounted in, did look at a pair of swords at unique Japan but they had gone before I could find the funds locking back they would have been a better buy than numerous single swords, will enjoy looking at all the threads on here in the meantime. Thanks Mark
  9. Hi, must have read about a thousand posts so far really enjoy being here. Question I have is what to look for when buying my next sword? I realise one persons opinion my differ to another ,I know that a. a loverly blade is the first point to me the better the condition the better in my view, b.would like them in original polish and not shortened. c.. would like original fittings with it no new fittings but don't mind them in shirasasa. Then we come to the Mei now this bit is confusing me as when I came here I would have automatically said signed but now that the vast majority seam to be gimme or not sure? I'm not know sure, obviously paped swords would be better but there dosent seem to many available in the uk and are they always correct? So what period is the best in peoples opinion, what recommended sellers are there in the uk looked at most online dealers but a lot have such lousy photos there impossible to judge. Sword I would really like belongs to a neighbour that there father brought back but it will never be for sale. Mark
  10. about mid 1500's ,Hamon is ko=midare in nie deki according to the seller
  11. Hi, Thanks for the comments, Had to have it polished as it was a shame to see it so dark, possibly wasn't financially viable to get it done but I'm sure it would have looked as nice when the officer first took it to war.No date to the other side. Mark
  12. Hi, Any idea as to period some I knew thought it was Hizen-to about 1600.
  13. Hi, will post a photo of the scabbard tomorrow ,appears to be a converted civilian one in a combat cover has some markings on it. why is it in such quality fittings with only a average blade. Mark
  14. But don't they initially impose the full rate of vat ,then you have to have the seller inform them its over 100 year old as they will not take your word for it before the vat is dropped to %5 . Any idea how long the whole process takes.? Mark
  15. Hi, Heres another of my swords another ww2 vet bring back with a older blade ,no Mei. Has the blade been shortened the Bo hi run all the way down the Nakago 22.5in cutting edge 28.75in overall
  16. Hi, Was going to call it a Shin unto in the header but as its not in shin gusto fittings I'll leave as is. This was my second sword many years ago that turned up locally from a house clearance when I saw it I had to have it , 4th seat at the 1941 exhibition. Mark
  17. Hi, thanks for your help you mention patina and the Mei, What affect the patina{rust] on the Nakago assume damp getting in to the handle? what if the sword was never in a damp place would the Nakago not rust as much, you mention the crisp Mei, I assume rust would wear it down so if it has little rust and is not disassembled often the Mei may not wear down ,it is very tight in the handle. also the first part of the Mei is not as sharp as the other 2 could it not have been done at a different time. when the last smith used this Mei what happened to his successors did they no longer work in the industry or just that they are not recorded. Thank Mark
  18. Thanks for the input looked lots of examples of swords with the same Mei,so many variations? but they all start in the same relationship to the ana like mine does? variation in the Nakagojiri do exist slightly mine is very similar not completely different, cant comment on workmanship as I know nothing yet, Gearing asked what do I see from the back edge, what am I looking for? From reading up I see they were very productive smiths and moved from Kishu to Osaka did this bring about and variation to sword production styes and Mei, I do have 3 books but non go into Mei or variations Thanks for any help mark
