  1. Ted, Thanks for your detailed reply, it's a terrible tragedy for the polishing world that supplies of good stone are becoming dangerously depleted. I also thank you for your advice about modern steels and the use of stones, perhaps I'll just get some rough stones for shaping and then finish using a cheaper method, as I say it's just for practice. Necessity being the mother of invention, I wonder if modern polishers when faced with crisis such as a stone disappeaing will develop novel techniques that ultimately take polishing in a new direction? Anyway, thanks for your advice, it's much appreciated. All the best, Joe
  2. Thanks for the advice Mr Doffin but I make my own blades and wanted to polish them myself, since they are practice blades (and not even nihonto in a purist sense) I thought it would be quite pleasant to do it as a pastime. I understand your enthusiasm to protect genuine nihonto from the untrained amateur. Personally I find your response mildy offensive. If anyone has any useful advice then please get in touch. Joe
  3. Hello folks, Just wondring where Kasumi-do fits on the spectrum of stones and how is it used, I thought it might be a sub-type of Uchigumori but I can't find information on it anywhere! Would be grateful if anyone could illuminate me with regards to this curious stone. Thanks in advance, Joe
  4. Thanks everyone with the info, unfortunately I don't own three swords from each period :D or that'd be a great idea, I will private message people for addresses Les seems like an excellent contact so I'd be much obliged if I could have his details PM. I'm in Edinburgh so if anyones close by I'd like to get in touch. Just one other thing, any kind of Token project would I think have to have close links to the other Token societies not just to stick together for the sake of it (although there's nothing wrong with that) but also to present a unified front when talking about daft laws or other such headline grabbing nonsense the government puts us through, membership to all I say! All the best guys and get in touch Joe
  5. Hi everyone It's been a while, I've been busy studying for my JLPT 3 and saving to get my new wak polished. I'm not in Japan, I've postponed the trip due to some more pressing practical issues. I wanted to ask some advice on a number of things, I'm a member of the Japan Scotland Society and would like to contribute by raising awareness of the topic of Nihonto at their general meeting in December sometime. Does anyone have any ideas as to a good topic for a half an hour lecture/video? I was thinking, brief introduction and then short vid about the forging process. I would much appreciate any advice as to how go about it and what topics have gone down well in the past. Also and this is just me pushing the boat out here......I feel we need something in Scotland by way of a Token Society. All the kantei meetings are too far away for us up here in the north and it leads to a feeling of isolation (cue violin) if anyone has any idea if this is a good or viable plan then please get in touch. Sorry for the extra long post, hope everyones well/happy Joe
  6. Thanks for the information Glad to hear he's well and still working, although I wont be able to visit him in Tokyo (on account of him being in a different place an all) Thanks again Mr Hennick! JoE :D
  7. I had the pleasure of speaking to John about three years ago in Tokyo. Does anyone know if he's still there? He was talking about moving back to the states. Any info would be much appreciated. Joe
  8. Hello once again. I've been away from my computer for a while and hope that everyone is healthy and in the best of spirits :D I'm coming to Tokyo on the 17th of August for 3 months and I had a problem with my hostel double booking the first three days of my trip. Is there any one out there kind enough to let me sleep on their couch? If so they will get free beer from me for the duration and, of course my fantastic company. All the best, Joe
  9. Do you think the gentleman who owns the Go would accept installments over 20 years? :D Joe
  10. Carlo, you get the award for best line of the day I'm going to get "the mother of morons is always pregnant" printed as a t-shirt. It's funny because it's true. I should be crying really, your totally right. Joe
  11. Thanks Jaques, I had already checked on Shoshin, but I can't seem to pin down any decent pictures or oshigata :? Best Wishes, Joe
  12. Cheers Paul, I'll have a look. Big storm where we are, I'm supposed to be going out tonight Never say never, you might find an out of polish Kiyomaro in a car boot sale in the near future. We can but dream. All the best, Joe.
  13. Hi Paul, Just read your post on the Christies/Bonhams sale. I want to go but I don't think I'll be able to get there in time Do you know which sword it is on the site? I've been looking but haven't seen it in the listings. Thanks Jaques for the pic, if anyone has any other info or pictures that would be great. All the best guys! Joe.
  14. Another general question to the group. Does anyone know if any of the emperor Gotoba's swords exist today? I came across one of his tanka today: Hito mo oshi Hito mo urameshi Ajiki-naku Yo wo omou yue ni. Mono omou mi wa. How I regret my fallen friends How I despise my foes! And, tired of life, I only seek To reach my long day's close, And gain at last repose. He struck me as a really interesting character and I'd be interested to see some of his work. I have searched extensively for examples online and going through my small library but to no avail. If anyone could help that would be grand :D
