  1. question is............ would the new digital SLR body takes the OLD lens or they come out with NEW lens ? the point and shoot version seems to work well with close -up, the 5 megapixel Sony one was used by none other than Big Mo on his web site 2 years ago. Milt THE ronin
  2. my sony point and shoot digital camera went kaput over the weekend.......looks like it can't focus anymore. Must be one time too many traveling through the airport security scan. Question for the list............. point and shoot digital camera vs the digital SLR . Any difference in pic quality ? ( assuming the megapixel # is the same ) In my younger days ( 20 years ago ).........I have the full Nikon stuffs, F1, F2, Nikormet with all sort of Nikkor lens, they are sitting in the closet gathering dusts........... Question............does the Nikon digital SLR camera body compatible with those old lens ? If yes, then i may ditch the point and shoot version and go " professional " again . Milt THE ronin
  3. suppose the sword has hagiri just above the hamachi ( so it is hidden under the habaki ).......... what if the polisher move up the hamachi and " reshape " the move up area to blend in with the rest of the nakago, re-patinate etc......... do we still have hagiri on this sword ? If yes......... why ( since it's no longer on the ha, then by definition it's not a HA giri ) ? Is there a term for " something-giri " on the nakago ? nakagogiri ? Milt THE ronin

Yes, I agree this is aikuchi, the fit of the koiguchi and the fuchi with the " merging " of pattern ( the semi round kozuka slot ) indicates that's there no tsuba intended. However........now this is my personal opinion only , first pic shows no ito on the tsuka and later it's wrapped . I think aikuchi type mounting usually does not have ito wrap on the tsuka. So the ' restoration " work is a bit off the convention. p.s. to nailed down the kashira, usually they use a " clove leaf/heart " shaped metal plate instead of the silk cord over the hole at the side. pps. and if the tsuka is " wrapped ", it's usually a round and round binding ( not diamond cross hatch ) with the menuki sitting on top of the binding. Sniped ALL 12 of hawk paintings ( early Edo period, Soga school ) cut from the big screen for the price of 1.............. a complete set. also I was made an honorary Scot for a deal made about two years ago..........but that's another story. 11. one time I posted someone's e-mail address on the sword list and was " chastised " soundly for that.............. may be the Daimyo ( you know who you are, the one that turned me to ronin ) or the sycophantic moderator can supply you with Gordon's e-mail address off line ? Milt THE ronin
  12. cut und paste from other sword message board.............. The information below was found by a friend of mine. Three directors, including the Chairman, who were due to retire soon, have been resigned by the NBTHK on full pay until their retirement date. Two of these were retired policemen. The Chairman has been replaced by Mr Sasa. The problem was that the Bunka-Cho had given a directive that the NBTHK panel should not put their own swords, nor those owned by their relatives, up for examination. The NBTHK rebelled against this, but Mr Goto, the two policemen and two others - that is five out of fourteen directors - agreed with the Bunka-Cho code. The dismissed three are appealing that their contract should not be ended since it was somehow arranged between the Police Department and the NBTHK. There are legal mutterings. It was shown by the previous Chairman Goto, that between 2001 when the Bunka-Cho directive was announced , and today, there have been 515 instances of that directive having been contravened. Tokyo Shimbun. The above was published on the Chunichi WEB Press in Japanese on 11 September, and taken from the Tokyo Shimbun report of 3 September.

  18. never say never............. there's always the remote chance it could happen. If there's serious doubt as in mark's case, it doesn't hurt to enquire as to the possibility. When there's so many swords submitted, minor screw-ups could happen, like the copy boy ( copy old man to a few ) spotted a few work sheets with no point scores noted in previous shinsa ( duely corrected ). milt THE ronin
  19. Mark, if that's the case, you really should write Gordon robson ( he's on the shinsa team ) about it, send him some good pics to refresh his memory. With all the swords submitted, it's possible there's a mix up . Milt THE ronin
  20. my dear Kapitan......... the mei is above and not your other " efforts " I have a koz ( lobster design ) with the same mei........... Milt THE ronin
  21. " RSVP Cognac " is only good for cooking.................... To get back to sword related topic before more of you get " demoted " to ronin............. anyone recall who comprise the fitting shinsa team ? I know Jim G. is one but who else ? Is that Japanese dentist on the team ? How about Hagihara sensei ? Milt THE ( one and only , so afr ) ronin
  22. a muramasa !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  23. that's what I thought too.............the late April Chicago shinsa is a surprise to most and I am not complaining. The Chicago show under a different management needs all the help to get on a firm footing and so far it's a success. Shinsa show usually draws a larger than usual crowd and that's a bonus to table holders . Milt THE ronin
  24. THE ronin is heading back to the mountain to pick chestnuts..............
  25. one is the Yoshikawa group, that's the one in Jersey and they are planning on a Chicago shinsa in late April 2007. The other with similar name is the NTHK ( NPO ) . There was a " dispute " that happened a few years back ( which I don't want to get into detail ) that resulted in the two groups . The shinsa origami ( assuming you didn't get pinkied , ) looks different. Milt THE ronin
