I wonder what it was for. With that said I have no idea in terms of age or school. Having a photo in the correct oritation would help. Take a look at other photos on the forum to get an idea of what I am talking about. Also I notice that the both photos are very reddish you might want to work on the color balance. Poor color balance can make the tsuba look very rusty. Yours truly, David Stiles Quote
John A Stuart Posted April 8, 2012 Report Posted April 8, 2012 Goodness knows what that is. An adaptation for a pole arm(?), the thing is tsuba have been used for a lot of things that were never intended; ornamentation on tansu etc. It has been ravaged a bit, eh? John Quote
runagmc Posted April 8, 2012 Report Posted April 8, 2012 It looks like it was adapted to a smaller nakago by someone who wasn't familiar with the common way of doing sekigane... Quote
kusunokimasahige Posted April 8, 2012 Report Posted April 8, 2012 Might as well have been a holding pin to slide into the haraidate of a helmet. The metal riveted object tapers down and has a distinct shape on the top side... Looks like a home made Maedate to me. KM Quote

Also the pin is mounted on the back side of the tsuba and the front is showing ,like when it was mounted on a sword. Quote
Thekirsh Posted April 9, 2012 Author Report Posted April 9, 2012 Thanks for all the replies guys, The photos were straight off the sale page hence the orientation and colour are not great. The tsuba is actually a nice chocolate colour but as you mentioned John it is a roughy I didn't even considered a Maedate but it certainly adds up, thanks KM Simon K Quote
runagmc Posted April 9, 2012 Report Posted April 9, 2012 That would make more sense than an adaptation for a smaller nakago... specially since there's no way it would be able to mount flush to the tsuka with that riveted on there... Quote
