shingen Posted October 28, 2011 Report Posted October 28, 2011 I was wondering if it is possible to determine which Sukesada made the sword below: Am I to understand correctly that Nijimei Sukesada could mean that the these are not of "good" quality? What would the value of a Wakizashi like this be? I know it is a western thing but the theme of the koshirae is lobster and comes back in the kozuka, tsuba and fuchi / kashira. The blade is flaweless. I am sorry for the photo's they are the only ones I have, this weekend I will make some better ones myself. Thanks! Quote
Grey Doffin Posted October 28, 2011 Report Posted October 28, 2011 Hi Rick, I don't think it will be possible to tie this sword to any particular smith who signed Sukesada. There were so many smiths working in late Koto and signing Sukesada. The important ones appended personal names (Yosozaemonojo, Genbeinojo, etc.) to their mei; the rest are considered to be of the school. This doesn't mean that your sword is poorly made. It could be quite delightful and still have only a niji mei, but it will likely never have an attribution to a smith or great value. From the little I can see in your pictures I would guess somewhere between $1,000 and $2,000, but others might have a better idea. Grey Quote
shingen Posted October 28, 2011 Author Report Posted October 28, 2011 Thank you for the information Grey, appreciate it, learning everyday. The sword belongs to a good friend of mine (they are his photo's) and I was just wondering if I could find some more info to learn a bit. Like you already mentioned there were many Sukesada so I kind of thought already it would not be possible to tie it to a certain Sukesada smith, was looking already for a while but couldn't find much. Well there is info enough but it being Nijimei does not make it easier, especially when you are a beginner like me. Should of realized that it would also be signed with the smith's personal name if it was made by a more famous Sukesada smith. First thing I will do is get some better photo's and post them here, these I understand aren't contributing to much. Will ask my friend if I can make some close ups to get some characteristics of the blade. Quote
shingen Posted October 29, 2011 Author Report Posted October 29, 2011 As mentioned I would post some more photo's, these I have made myself today: All info is welcome. Would anyone know what the Kanji means on the Kozuka? Quote
