truelotus Posted August 16, 2011 Report Posted August 16, 2011 hmmm .. the quality of chinese copies are getting better and better ... my friend owned katana made by chinese forge, from sponge iron (folding & forging) and though it is not as good as real gendaito, but I seriously think that all of the details, such as when we loooked at the hamon (real hamon) we can see clearly nie, nioi, hataraki ... yeah ... good sword come at a price, I got my special made katana I think it may pass as medium grade gendaito for untrained eye :D now, if the makers in china begins to read some books, I think newbies may expect difficulties in near future :D Quote
Guido Posted August 16, 2011 Report Posted August 16, 2011 hmmm .. the quality of chinese copies are getting better and better ... No, they don't. The "quality" is basically the same as when they started out in the early 90's. Quote
sanjuro Posted August 16, 2011 Report Posted August 16, 2011 I agree with Guido. 'Quality' in this case being a relative term. If it aint real its crap, and even high quality crap is still just crap. What is improving in the Chinese fakes is the fidelity to a Japanese type rather than a gaudy, cheap nasty, ill informed Chinese interpretation of the Japanese sword. The basic inherent "quality" of the fakes remains pathetic. Only the appearance gives an illusion of quality. When talking quality, one first needs an appreciation of what quality is in relation to the nihonto. Quote
muse matso Posted August 16, 2011 Author Report Posted August 16, 2011 Hello, The last pictures off the two swords, number 5 and 9. Hope this is oke for recognize. Albert. Quote
muse matso Posted August 16, 2011 Author Report Posted August 16, 2011 Number 9. Thanks Albert. Quote
sencho Posted August 16, 2011 Report Posted August 16, 2011 Albert, No. 5 looks suspicious... maybe a fake... show us the tang and that will probably say for sure, but that "oil on water" hada look is not promising! Cheers. Quote
Bruno Posted August 16, 2011 Report Posted August 16, 2011 5 is fake for sure and 9 is guenine (star stamp) but scabbard is not original, nor tsuba. Blade looks badly treated. Quote
muse matso Posted August 16, 2011 Author Report Posted August 16, 2011 What do you think off the blade from nr5. What have happened to blade nr 9,a lot off pitting/grain,is the hamon original. Thanks for all the commend people. Quote
sencho Posted August 16, 2011 Report Posted August 16, 2011 I think Bruno is right, Albert... no. 5 looks like a fake.... that swirly hada on the blades gives that away immediately... Number 9 could be real wartime Nihonto or a factory produced Japanese WW2 sword... in either case, and again as Bruno points out, it is not in good condition.... Cheers. Quote
muse matso Posted August 16, 2011 Author Report Posted August 16, 2011 Hello everybody, Many thanks for your proffesional help with the swords/katana's. I have learned a lot from everybody on this board. And maybe once i own a real authentic katana. Cheers Albert. Quote
johnb Posted August 17, 2011 Report Posted August 17, 2011 Three pages talking about Chinese crap? Please! Johnb Quote
Bruno Posted August 17, 2011 Report Posted August 17, 2011 Actually one of them is not a chinese crap, RJT smith so true gendaito. Quote
sanjuro Posted August 18, 2011 Report Posted August 18, 2011 Nine swords, none of which are nihonto and one of which is perhaps a gendaito in lousy condition with a bunky koshirae. The rest are just obvious Chinese rubbish. Not a very good average for the amount of bandwidth and time wasted is it? A few books (Make that one basic book) and a bit of personal research on the part of the OP would have yielded far more knowledge of a more lasting kind. I wonder if we will be asked to adjudicate on the next shipment of assorted detritus? Quote
muse matso Posted August 19, 2011 Author Report Posted August 19, 2011 Hi Keith, Did you had a bad night, why are you so stressfull ,no one is telling ore asking you to read this? You need a little bid off zen in your mind. Albert. Quote
sanjuro Posted August 19, 2011 Report Posted August 19, 2011 Albert. I'm not stressed, you merely didnt like my opinion. Your initial post clearly states 'Please give your opinion about these swords'. That's exactly what I did... :D I did it without fear, favour or regard to consequence, because it needed doing. That my friend is about as 'Zen' as it can be. One cannot have 'Zen in their mind' since Zen in this sense is a condition of 'No Mind'. Look it up... exposure to a book or two wouldn't hurt you.
