Below are pix of my newest acquisition which arrived today. I have actually been looking at this piece for over two years and saw it again at the Tampa show. After trying to be good, I finally gave in and called the seller last week. I love the piece, especially the carving. My feeling is that it is early to mid edo. Possibly Choshu, but the problem is I really have no idea of the school or date. It is a very thick and heavy plate for its size. Dimentions are 7.1 x 6.7 cm. Mimi is .7 cm, seppa dai .75 cm. Any help or enlightenment is greatly appreciated.

Looks like it could well be Choshu. I have a tsuba with a similar motif, that I will try to post once I get my camera back from a friend that I lent it to. As to age, looks old to me - maybe Muromachi? Cheers, Bob

Hi Fred D.,

I would say that the tsuba is likely Choshu and would date it to the middle Edo period (ca. 1670 – 1770). I am sure a more complete judgement can be obtained from a formal shinsa via the NTHK or NBTHK. Overall I like the design and craftsmanship of the tsuba.

One of my first posts, for what it's worth I also believe your tsuba is Choshu school. The design looks to be one big Peony blossom. They used it alot on their tsuba, mostly as part of the motif instead of the whole thing, I've only seen a couple like this. Attached are a couple pictures of a tsuba I have similar to yours, same edges too. Mine measures a little over 3 inches across. I had a note with a the translation but it's not in the box with it, I think it might read Choshu ju Katsunao but I'm sure I mistranslated it. Yours looks more 3 dimensional than mine though and maybe a little older, pretty neat.

Regards,

Lance
