Hector Posted August 24 Report Posted August 24 If I do a search and get a big hit of say, 50 pages, as soon as I press 'next page' I get a warning like "Please wait another X seconds before attempting another search". So let me get this straight; each page of one search counts as a separate search? Best, Hector 1 Quote
eternal_newbie Posted August 24 Report Posted August 24 Blame the forum software. Basically, unlike most forum searches, rather than run the search in the background and then give you a token so you can page through the results, the "search" is actually just a query string in the URL: https://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/search/?q=hector&quick=1 This means that there's no cached search results to quickly grab and show you, so every single page is indeed its own independent search (i.e. page 1: find me the first 50 posts with "Hector"; page 2: find me posts 51-100 with "Hector"). Most modern forum software is better than this, so hopefully the planned upgrades will make this a thing of the past. 2 Quote

I thought that I was doing something wrong at this end. 1 Quote
Brian Posted August 24 Report Posted August 24 Indeed, and it's because searching through the hundreds of thousands of posts is one of the most resource intensive things that can happen to the forum. So it it is a necessary limit, until we can afford to have better hosting without going full commercial. Of course there is always the Gold membership that reduces search intervals down to a more comfortable limit, and I think $5/month is easily worth the convenience. Brian 2 1 Quote
Lewis B Posted August 24 Report Posted August 24 From my perspective reducing the search throttling and the ability to edit posts for an extended time without the notice message that a post had been edited, justify the Gold membership fee. @Brian will the new forum software have some additional Gold member perks? 2 Quote
Brian Posted August 24 Report Posted August 24 I am certain there will be, but it's a huge update, and I have yet to play with all the features. So time will tell but I suspect there will be a lot of improvements for everyone. Gold members also currently enjoy larger file sizes and can post more images. Plus many more features. 2 1 Quote
