jeep54 Posted Sunday at 04:09 AM Report Posted Sunday at 04:09 AM Hello I had this posted on the Wehrmacht Awards forum, and it was suggested I post it here to possibly determine the Maker. Please let me know if you need further pictures or information. Quote
jeep54 Posted Monday at 01:48 AM Author Report Posted Monday at 01:48 AM Here is another picture of the signature. I hope this can help identify the maker... Quote
Rivkin Posted Monday at 08:17 AM Report Posted Monday at 08:17 AM Unforutnately this is very likely a fire damage and a severe one though surprisingly it did not affect patination much so maybe long time ago... More pictures of the work itself would be helpful. By default this is Muromachi. Quote
jeep54 Posted Monday at 02:42 PM Author Report Posted Monday at 02:42 PM I tried to do a better job of taking more pictures, please let me know what you think. Quote
Rivkin Posted Monday at 04:30 PM Report Posted Monday at 04:30 PM They don't show the work itself. It looks like nakago acquired unusual curvature compared to rather straight the rest of the sword, which might indicate it was exposed to flame rather than entire sword. However, what the blade is remains uncertain. Nakago to me felt more Muromachi, but it could be later. Quote
jeep54 Posted Monday at 05:16 PM Author Report Posted Monday at 05:16 PM (edited) Thank you for the help. What "work", do you want me to show? I can take more pictures? Let me know what to target. Edited Monday at 05:27 PM by jeep54 Quote

He means the workmanship of the blade itself. Specifically, the following will help: A picture of the entire blade out of its fittings (on both sides) - the shape can help determine age and maker Closeups of different sections of the naked blade, especially both sides of the tip and the tang Use indirect lighting and turn off flash so some details of the steel grain can be captured by the camera Take a look at this thread, where someone else is doing the same exercise and similar advice was offered: https://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/56601-thoughts-on-this-tanto Edited Monday at 05:31 PM by eternal_newbie Added link to other thread with examples Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted Monday at 06:32 PM Report Posted Monday at 06:32 PM Here's an example, posted by @JakeNYC. Of course yours won't look like this, but he has a black background, small bright light at an agle, and close enough to show steel texture and hamon: 2 Quote
jeep54 Posted Monday at 09:03 PM Author Report Posted Monday at 09:03 PM Sorry for having a difficult time. This is all new to me. Here are more that I took. I hope I have taken enough correctly for you to be able to help. Again I apologize for my lack of knowledge and abilities. Quote
Lewis B Posted Monday at 09:06 PM Report Posted Monday at 09:06 PM Lot of active red rust. I would treat the blade carefully with Tsubaki oil and leave a thin film of oil to halt the progression. WIpe off with soft cloth or lint free tissue and repeat every few weeks. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted Monday at 09:22 PM Report Posted Monday at 09:22 PM Charles, have a look into your PMs. Orientation of the blade tip-upwards, no HABAKI, plain dark background, object presented as cut-out so not much background is visible. 2 Quote
