I recently acquired a katana. I am really struggling to identify it. I used google and it gave me a date 1598, some one else I asked said it was actually 1850 and by Yokoyama Sukeharu. I have been told the 1598 date could be a tribute to a master of the past is that a thing? help me out here what have I actually got????

Google was wrong, whoever you asked was correct: shin shinto Bizen, Osafune Sukeharu, a lucky day in August in the third year of Kaei 1850 in the western calendar.

Sorry, on my phone so reproducing the kanji is a problem.

Unfortunately Google "search" nowadays is somewhat more reliant on AI hallucinations than data analysis/indexation; please adjust your expectations and research methodology accordingly.

Hi Geraint,

Sorry for the short post yesterday.

前国船住横山祐春

 - Bizen kuni Osafune ju Yokoyama Sukeharu - [Made by] Yokoyama Sukeharu resident of Osafune [in] Bizen province.

永三年八月吉日- Kaei san'en hachi gatsu kichi jitsu - Kaei [era name], third year, eighth month, lucky day.

There's another example of his signature and his work here:
