Battara Posted Monday at 03:53 AM Report Posted Monday at 03:53 AM I've seen a kai gunto with a brown scabbard and a green tsuka wrap. Is this rare? Quote
Ian B3HR2UH Posted Monday at 06:33 AM Report Posted Monday at 06:33 AM I have seen a couple with brown lacquered same scabbards but never one with green binding .This combination would be extremely unusual I would be very very suspicious of this and if it is coming out of Japan I would assume it has been rewrapped 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted Monday at 01:47 PM Report Posted Monday at 01:47 PM A picture would help, but the brown saya is quite normal, but a custom job: I tried a search on that green ito, but keep coming up with army gunto discussions. Seems to appear more often on civil swords refitted for the war. So, don't know about what you saw. 1 Quote
Conway S Posted Monday at 08:17 PM Report Posted Monday at 08:17 PM What does the blade look like? The post-war souvenir swords sometimes had green tsuka Ito. The scabbard is genuine, but the handle may be rewrapped in this example. 2 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted Monday at 08:35 PM Report Posted Monday at 08:35 PM I agree with Conway. Not the standard paint color for navy, but not unheard of. Alternating wrap turns are Japanese, but wrap style is not normal navy. Gaps in the wrap may point toward a re-wrap. Quote
Ian B3HR2UH Posted Monday at 09:07 PM Report Posted Monday at 09:07 PM Look at where the top ashi is in relation to the koiguchi . This is all wrong - avoid it . 1 Quote
Battara Posted Tuesday at 02:53 AM Author Report Posted Tuesday at 02:53 AM Thank you folks sooooo much. Will keep looking for a kai gunto, signed and with a same or sharkskin scabbard. I'm ok with a machine made blade too. Quote
