If it has no papers it is likely GIMEI. There were more than 30 SUKESADA swordsmiths over the centuries, so you have to do your homework and compare the workmanship and signatures. 

It could be a legitimate BIZEN blade and GIMEI at the same time. Look at the quality and condition of the blade and not at the signature. You will probably not be able to find a genuine SUKESADA in decent condition for $ 3,000.--.

Is the mei signed over top of the patina/corrosion on the nakago?

Looks like a "showa22" sword. That blue backdrop is notorious.  

 

He likes to "touch up" the blades he gets so I would tread caution with what you get.

BTW, I'm not being sarcastic or condescending - I'm just impressed you're getting into the hobby at that age!

Thanks for the compliment I appreciate the advice you are all giving me! I’ve been fortunate enough to own different antique weapons from different cultures and hope to continue studying and collecting.
