SwordGuyJoe Posted March 29, 2010 Report Posted March 29, 2010 All, Does anyone know of a Sadamune that signed with a kao? I know this is a gold inlay, so it may not even be a Sadamune blade, but curious if anyone knows of a Sadamune that did sign this way. I checked the toko taikan and hawleys and can't find anyone. Thanks in advance. Quote
ottou812 Posted March 29, 2010 Report Posted March 29, 2010 It's an attribution by someone else to Sadamune. That's my opinion. Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted April 1, 2010 Author Report Posted April 1, 2010 I agree that this was more than likely not 'signed' by the smith. What I am curious about is, does anyone know of a Sadamune that used a kao in his mei? Any thoughts on era or what Sadamune this would be (if it truly is Sadamune)? My guess would be late shin-shinto, but far from an expert. Here are some additional photos. Thank you for the help! Quote
ottou812 Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 Again, I think the kao belongs to the person that attributed it and not from Sadamune. Quote
Jacques Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 I don't think it is a true Soshu Sadamune. Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted April 2, 2010 Author Report Posted April 2, 2010 I completely agree with what you guys are saying, agree that this is not a blade signed by Sadamune, and know what Kinzogan mei is (thanks to the glossary link above). I am trying to understand which Sadamune the person was attributing this blade to. There are around a hundred of them listed in Hawleys some rated very well, some rated very lowly. I know that I am not going to be able to pin this down completely, but if I could get down to a handful of options, I could investigate what other Sadamune created blades with the same characteristics. I will look to take this to shinsa when I have the time and money to go to San Fransisco to get a final answer. My question is, what era do you believe this to be from? I said shin-shinto based on the rust on the nakago, but am looking for more opinions. Thank you. Quote
Mark Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 as the attribution just says Sadamune (and not other idenifiers) then he is says THE Sadamune - the big guy. Blade looks Shinshinto to me, most attributions will have the person doing the attributions name and Kao on the reverse side Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted April 2, 2010 Author Report Posted April 2, 2010 THE Sadamune - the big guy While I really like the blade, I doubt that! This brings up another question. When I take it to shinsa, would a false attribution cause poor rating or rejection? I wouldn't think so, but I'm not sure. Quote
Mark Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 one positive thing about lacquer is it comes off. So submit it as is, if/when it does not pass maybe the shinsa team will tell you what they think it is - then you can decide, remove the attribution and get a paper or keep it as is. As a note if you think it has any chance of being mid 1300's Soshu submit it to more than one group for shina before deciding to remove the lacquer Quote
