Ray Singer Posted October 12 Report Posted October 12 Signed Kaneyoshi and dated a day in May, 1944. It appears to be authentic. 2 Quote
jokinham Posted October 12 Author Report Posted October 12 Is this sighned by the maker? Or the school that made it? Is there another name there? Thank you! Quote
Ray Singer Posted October 12 Report Posted October 12 The swordsmith name is Kaneyoshi. He is the individual who made the sword. There are no other names, just Kaneyoshi and the date I shared above. Quote

A quick translation: The ancestor of swordsmith Matsubara Kaneyoshi (real name Matsubara Shōzōji) was the son of Tegai Kaneyoshi (手掻包吉) , and he moved moved from Yamato to Seki in the Nambokuchō era, along with Shizu Saburō Kaneuji, after which he changed his name to Kaneyoshi (兼吉) in the early Muromachi period. According to the sayagaki and hakogaki of this sword, in May 1944, when the Pacific War was raging and the cabinet of Tōjō Hideki resigned en masse, Matsubara Kaneyoshi forged this memorial sword at the Inaba Tanrenjō in Seki (Noshū), giving himself wholeheartedly to its completion so that it could be left for later generations. More infos here, not much about him Another exemple : https://www.nipponto.co.jp/swords8/NT331993.htm? 1 Quote
jokinham Posted October 13 Author Report Posted October 13 Thank you! I was wondering what it all meant. Quote
mecox Posted October 13 Report Posted October 13 @jokinham Joe that is a very nice shingunto for Army and a well made genuine sword. As noted by Ray is dated May 1944 and the smiths family name was Matsubara. He also earlier made blades for the Navy. He is described with examples in this paper in NMB Downloads (search it with Matsubara) also an example like yours 1 Quote
