Deshi Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 Hi all, I'm new to nihonto collecting and i have just purchased my first potential restoration job (very excited about the prospect of sending it to Japan for a traditional polish). Before i even contemplate sending it to Japan i was hoping for a bit of help from the comunity in translating the signature. I have spent several hours online looking for references, with no success. I purchased the blade from an antique dealer and he has given me the following information: Nagasa – 72cm Sori – 12mm Motothaba 32mm Sakihaba – 22.5mm Motokasane 8mm Kissaki – 37mm Hamon – Suguha Any information regarding this translation will be very much appreciated. Cheers, John Quote
Jacques Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 Hi, I'm afraid that blade is dead, the kissaki has been broken and repaired i think the boshi goes troughout the ha. Quote
hybridfiat Posted March 23, 2010 Report Posted March 23, 2010 The detail on the kassaki isnt very good, are you sure Jacques? Is it my eyes or has the nakago (tang) been cleaned up? Steel wool or something? Quote
Jacques Posted March 23, 2010 Report Posted March 23, 2010 HI, The detail on the kassaki isnt very good, are you sure Jacques? 99% sure. Quote
Deshi Posted March 23, 2010 Author Report Posted March 23, 2010 thankyou for your speedy responses Jacques & hybridfiat, The hamon is defineatly there. I've taken another picture with the flash turned on, unfortunately my photography skills are not quite there. Regarding the mei, i showed a Japanese friend on mine and she said that the mei was indecipherable to her, much like the way westerners sign their signature on a document. any ideas? I'm a little lost on this one. Quote
Stephen Posted March 23, 2010 Report Posted March 23, 2010 John its better to shoot down the blade with a light bulb off to the side that will show any hamon, the mei is soshu scrip and i dont have a clue sorry. Quote
