LEE1989 Posted May 3 Report Posted May 3 Hello, seniors! I am a novice-level katana enthusiast. Due to my lack of knowledge, I have many questions to ask you. I have recently collected some antique katana, but it seems that the problem described in my title is common. I would like to ask the following questions: 1 If the appraisal certificate of the Japan Art Sword Association does not mention the katana's accessories, can it be understood that only the katana itself was appraised, and the matching accessories are likely to be added later, rather than the same period as the katana itself? 2 If there is only one hole on the handle of the katana's accessories, and the katana itself has two holes, can it be determined that the katana's accessories were added later? 3 Is this phenomenon common in current katana transactions? I have seen very high-level katana with two appraisal certificates, one for the katana itself and one for its accessories. For a transaction, is this phenomenon normal or is the seller responsible? 4 How should I deal with this problem if I want to solve it? Below is the latest knife I received. It is obvious that there is a large gap at the tsuba position, which is the reason for the looseness after assembly. Quote
Brian Posted May 3 Report Posted May 3 It is rare to find a sword with original koshirae. These were changed often over the life of a sword, and almost always you can consider them as replaced at some point. Not a big deal. The 2 holes means it was remounted at least once, and they drilled a new hole...again extremely common. The blade is usually the important part, the fittings are secondary unless they are very high quality. Find a restorer who can add sekigane to your tsuba to tighten it up. Not a very difficult job. If a sword comes with a very good tsuba, very often it will be swapped out for another one when selling. Don't worry too much about your fittings. 1 1 Quote

You're closer to Japan, send them there if they are high value items (5k USD or above). Otherwise I'm sure members here can guide you to local craftsmen in AUS. Quote
