BJH Posted January 31, 2010 Report Posted January 31, 2010 Hi All, My father was a medic in WWII and was given a Japanese Sword by a soldier he treated. In 1989 he sent rubbings to an expert in Boston who replied with the following; “Your sword is a wakizashi that is signed with the name of Tadatsuna. Unfortunately, the signature on your sword is not correct. Tadatsuna was a 17th century swordsmith who was well-known – and hence there are many copies of his work. Thus, your sword is a genuine older Japanese sword – possibly a couple of hundred years old.” It has a carving on each side. A Japanese neighbor said one was FUDO and the other is a carp climbing waterfall. The writing is TADATSUNA IKKANSHI 2nd at a place called SETTSU. My father is 82 now and is interested in selling the sword, but we have no idea what it is worthy. Any insight from the experts would be greatly appreciated. I have pictures of the carvings that came out ok and of the signature which is very poor picture quality. I’m going to try a rubbing of that. I had trouble attaching the pictures here, but can e-mail to interested parties. Thanks----Brett Quote
