Tlognaws
Hi everyone, here are details on one of my recently acquired tsuba. Photos are taken by my 200x microscope. You can see the brown straight line running through the surface is my hair, which is to imagine the scale of extremely tiny strokes and lines of work. It surprise me a lot, that how can a craftsman work in such small space with so much confidence! Can anyone tell me how good is this ? It's would be great if you can share your references on other pieces and discuss more. Thank all!!!! 4
OceanoNox
Ford Hallam and others know better, I think the detail of craftsmanship increases with time and also with the introduction of magnifying glasses. I am not sure if such glasses were solely imported by Portugal or the Netherlands, but their use is attested at least for the Edo period (https://www.metmuseu...lection/search/55407). Spartancrest
An image taken from L. Gonse, L'art Japonais, Paris I883 You can see the carver is wearing glasses while the sheet metal worker doesn't need them.
