TenguSan Posted June 26, 2023 Report Posted June 26, 2023 Hello, I recently purchased a katana with a shirasaya which has a sayagaki from Honami Koson. I got that much from the kao and some other similar posts here, but am not having much luck otherwise. Any assistance is appreciated. best regards and thanks in advance Quote
xiayang Posted June 27, 2023 Report Posted June 27, 2023 (edited) Hi John, Here's my best guess: 兼信 = Kanenobu [I'm not 100% certain on the reading of the first character] 長貳尺貳寸六分 = Length: 2 shaku 2 sun 6 bu (~68.48 cm) 昭和癸巳卯月 = April of Shōwa, year of the water snake (Shōwa 30 = 1955 CE) (Shōwa 28 = 1953 CE) 本阿弥光遜 [花押] = Hon‘ami Kōson [kaō] Edited June 27, 2023 by xiayang Thank you Moriyama san. Indeed, 癸巳 is the 28th year of the Shōwa era (I got confused since it's the 30th year of the 60-year cycle). 3 Quote

TenguSan Posted July 11, 2023 Author Report Posted July 11, 2023 Thank you very much Xiayang and Koichi! It has papers with NTHK attributing it to early Edo, although the seller was certain that Honami Koson was right that it is late muromachi. Quote
