matthew Posted June 4, 2023 Author Report Posted June 4, 2023 Picked this up today for very little money , the blade has been sanded at some point , habaki has been added also the scabbard is a strange composition ,not quite sure but not metal , all fittings have Matching numbers , could this sword be salvaged or is it worth it ? would need a new catch in the handle ,new habaki and blade sorting out , i think probably not the time or effort ? Bruce Pennington Posted June 4, 2023 Report Posted June 4, 2023 The scabbard is cloth over wood, then lacquered heavily over the cloth. Gives a really nice texture when it is in good shape. I personally do not know of anyone that repairs that sort of material. The photo may be deceiving of the blade, but I do not think it is Japanese. The notches where the nakago meets the blade are offset, which is only seen in NCO blades, not officer blades. Chinese made blades almost always have them offset like this. 1 Quote

Thanks bruce , yes the notches are offset , i thought it had been lashed together from different parts , only reason i bought it was because it was very cheap less than £100 , probably best to see if i can get my money , thanks again 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted June 4, 2023 Report Posted June 4, 2023 You could get more money than that by selling the fittings, alone, or piecing them out. Two years ago, I paid US$200 just for a tsuka! 1 Quote

Tensho Posted June 5, 2023 Report Posted June 5, 2023 I would keep the blade with it. Good tsunagi for displaying the koshirae. Quote
matthew Posted June 5, 2023 Author Report Posted June 5, 2023 Hi Thanks for your advice , i might keep it together as yet as a display piece im not sure , the habaki is terrible and spoils the overall look ,if i could find a better one that fits properly i might keep it together regards mat Quote
