hddennis Posted January 29, 2023 Report Posted January 29, 2023 I acquired this yesterday and wonder what it is? Age and signature translation if possible. It is 6 inches wide and 6 1/2 inches tall. Thanks, Howard Dennis Quote
SteveM Posted January 29, 2023 Report Posted January 29, 2023 It's a Chinese maker's mark. 大清光緒年製 Da Qing Guangxu Nian Zhi. Supposed to be from between 1875 and 1908, but I believe these too are faked, the same as swords, so beware. Matsunoki Posted January 29, 2023 Report Posted January 29, 2023 Hello Howard As Steve rightly says this is a Chinese reign mark that basically says “made during the Guangxu period of the Great Qing dynasty”. It is trying to convince us that this is a piece of Imperial porcelain, which sadly it isn’t. It is modern and mass produced but loosely in the style of what is usually called “Canton enamel” or “Rose medallion”. One common giveaway is that the mark looks like it has been applied with a rubber stamp rather than actual calligraphy. Also the colours are “off” compared to period pieces. This type of porcelain was never made for Imperial Court or domestic Chinese consumption…..it was exclusively for export to the West. I hope this news is not too disappointing. With any Chinese porcelain nowadays it is safer to assume “fake” unless proven otherwise! All the best. Colin 3 1 Quote
hddennis Posted January 29, 2023 Author Report Posted January 29, 2023 Thank you both for responding. I have never seen this style with the raised painting like Japanese Moriage. Live and learn as they say.Oh well at $12.50 I got it for the price of the wooden stand and much less than decorator value which is what I'll do with it. Appreciate the help again, Howard Dennis Quote
