Kiko Posted July 17 Report Posted July 17 (edited) Thanks, Ian! An interesting and beautiful piece! If those are indeed eyes he has given his sea cucumbers—as it appears to me—it is quite curious to note the hybridization the artisan seems to have created here between namako and namazu. Bazza Posted July 17 Report Posted July 17 Ah well then, a cucumber or derivative??? Is there a Japanese cuisine expert in the House??? BaZZa. Quote
Kiko Posted July 17 Report Posted July 17 (edited) On the other hand, Jean, a prominent member of this forum recently told us that "It would not be the intent of TSUBA artisans to create realistic copies of nature," and since I tend to believe him, the same might well apply to kozuka makers That said and jokes aside, the Internet informs me that some sea cucumbers do indeed possess genuine small organs (ocelli) which could be described as eyes —but are more akin to light detectors— located at the base of their oral tentacles.
