drbvac Posted August 10, 2022 Report Posted August 10, 2022 Signed - Kashu Kanawaza-Ju Sumimiya Kanenori forged 1687 - and although there are over 30 Kanenori listed only 2 even have Sumimiya in their descriptions and seemingly only worked after 1688 !!!! The fittings are pretty nice as well - and papered by NBTHK, NTHK - NPO, All I am wondering if anyone has any information on this particular smith - there is even a typo in the cutting description which I have shared with Markus for his files. I did fund this in one directory of Japanese smiths and it is probably him but the dates don't match when the sword was forged but only out by 1 year - maybe one of his first attempts and that is why he tested it ! Anyone ever see any additional info on this smith ? 2 Quote
SteveM Posted August 11, 2022 Report Posted August 11, 2022 Your man is listed in Markus's swordsmith index as Kanenori 2nd Gen, Kaga. Markus's entry for this smith has a lot of detail. The smith is noted as a Genroku (1688-1704) smith, but I think that is just meant to be representative of the era in which he worked. I don't think it should be taken as an absolute, exclusive front and back hard stop for his works. 2 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted August 12, 2022 Report Posted August 12, 2022 @drbvac Brian, Is that kao tied to Kanenori or is that the cut-tester's kao? Quote

Bruce Pennington Posted August 13, 2022 Report Posted August 13, 2022 AH! I remember Markus Sesko mentioned a smith doing that in his great book "Tameshigiri", but don't recall if this was the guy. The date puts him in the right time frame, though. @Markus - Could this be the guy you mentioned? I made a brief attempt at browsing through the initial pages, but didn't have any luck locating the smith you mentioned. Quote
