jaymob Posted February 28, 2022 Report Posted February 28, 2022 Hello All! Glad to come across this community when trying to figure out the age of a sword I inherited from grandfather. He spent time in the pacific during WW2 and brought back some swords, the one I have is in relativity rough shape, and I'm trying to determine the age and if it's possibly hand made. As you can see below, the sword has no markings on the blade an no markings/stamps on the tang as for as I can tell. The sword is steel (checked with magnet) and I'd like to eventually get it refurbished if it's worth it. Any help is greatly appreciated ! Quote
Grey Doffin Posted February 28, 2022 Report Posted February 28, 2022 Hi Jay, Your sword is older than WWII, sometime between mid 15th and late 19th centuries and hard to say much more without better pictures. Where in The States do you live? Maybe there is someone knowledgeable and honest nearby who can give you a better idea what you have. It needs to be seen by a properly trained polisher before you decide to have it restored. Mean time, here is a page with a care & handling brochure you should read: https://nbthk-ab2.org/sword-characteristics/ Grey Quote
jaymob Posted February 28, 2022 Author Report Posted February 28, 2022 Much appreciated Grey. What helped you determine it predates WWII? Quote
jaymob Posted February 28, 2022 Author Report Posted February 28, 2022 And I can definitely take more photos, any certain angles or close ups? Quote
Grey Doffin Posted February 28, 2022 Report Posted February 28, 2022 Hi Jay, You asked "What helped you determine it predates WWII?" 40 years of study:-) Pictures aren't going to tell us a lot; this needs to be seen in hand by someone who knows what he's looking at. Grey 2 Quote
