tony edmunds Posted December 26, 2008 Report Posted December 26, 2008 Hi Guys Having received such generous and expert advice on my tsuba I thought I'd seek your opinions on this Tsuka I brought back from Kyoto.I bought this in an antique shop specializing in urushi mono.I know this is a common theme( battle at the Uji river) but I'd be grateful for your views on possible maker (the F/K is mumei). Kindest regards Tony Quote
docliss Posted December 26, 2008 Report Posted December 26, 2008 Dear Tony The depiction on the fuchi is of an historical/legendary scene that is executed in a relatively high relief, using a rich selection of the coloured alloys. All of these factors suggest Hamano work of the early C19, an attribution that is supported by its apparent quality. Regards, John L. Quote
tony edmunds Posted December 26, 2008 Author Report Posted December 26, 2008 Thanks John I've seen a couple of similar themed F/K of varying quality judging from the same/ito I would have guessed late edo. Here is the Kashira. Regards Tony Quote
Bungo Posted December 28, 2008 Report Posted December 28, 2008 again quality is very subjective................. here's one fuchi that's almost " identical " design, but there's different level of quality. milt Quote
Guido Posted December 28, 2008 Report Posted December 28, 2008 Milt, you failed to post the dimensions to prove not only that your's is better than his, but also to proudly announce "mine is bigger than yours". Quote
Jean Posted December 28, 2008 Report Posted December 28, 2008 Wait to see mine, probably available in the next dead "Rafle" 2009 :D :D Quote
tony edmunds Posted December 28, 2008 Author Report Posted December 28, 2008 Hi Milt What's the signature on your Fuchi? It appears this is a popular theme, I've seen it on an Omori Teruhide F/K at the Sannenzaka museum in Kyoto ( page 50 of Rokusho Vol 34) in 2005 and several times since, Tokugawa Art has a pair for sale which don't look as good as mine or Milt's in the pics. All the best Tony Quote
Bungo Posted December 28, 2008 Report Posted December 28, 2008 Milt, you failed to post the dimensions to prove not only that your's is better than his, but also to proudly announce "mine is bigger than yours". You betcha.......... Nothing is " perfect ", my set has a " mis-matched " kashira ( at least that's what I thought ). Just to illustrate the point that workmanship/taste could be " subjective ". the mei is Hisahide, late edo, listed in Kinko meikan ( new edi )..............but then, why compare strokes for strokes ? mei can be copied easily as we agreed. p.s. here's to " show off " the " other end " milt Quote
