Wmoore77 Posted September 26, 2020 Report Posted September 26, 2020 Hi all I am new here and have a sword I’d like to know more about If anyone can help me with the translation I’d appreciate it all I know right now is it has the Seki stamp on it Thanks Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted September 26, 2020 Report Posted September 26, 2020 Sure about the date: July 1942 Smith: 兼直 (Kanenao) but I'm bad about smith names, so could be wrong. Small stamp is the Seki stamp, which means the blade was made non-tranditionally, in the Seki prefecture for the Army. 1 1 Quote
DTM72 Posted September 28, 2020 Report Posted September 28, 2020 Sho wa Showa is period beginning 1926 Ju 10 Shichi 7 Nen Year Shichi 7 Gatsu Month Hi Day So, A day in the 7th month of 1943 I found 3 Kanenao working during Showa. All three examples used a full signature, not just the name. I posted the oshigata of the signature that looks closest in style to the original post. I found no exact match though. Hope this helps. Wmoore77 Posted September 29, 2020 Author Report Posted September 29, 2020 Is there any doubt the signature is real could it have just been where there was a war going on Quote

I have read where (and I'm talking WAY out of my area of knowledge) the full mei is a sign the smith, himself, cut the mei, but the 2-character mei could be done by apprentice of mei-cutter. Could be off-base about that, though. 1 Quote

Here are all three I found, to compare side by side with yours. Quote
