Although this TSUBA looks as if it has been mounted on a blade, I have the impression that it might be a cast reproduction, possibly from a IAITO. It could also be a genuine one, but was very corroded in the past as the surface seems unusually coarse. Difficult to judge from the photos.

Thank You Jean,

It is indeed mounted on a sword.

I was thinking maybe cast copy as well but when you look at the copper roof lines with a jewellers loupe, they are inlayed into the iron.

I have cropped the picture to hopefully show this.

Would this be normal practice on a cast copy tsuba?

Again, thanks for the help

All the best

Mark

Hello Mark,

The condition of the surface your tsuba doesn't look good at all or natural.  It really makes me think it a reproduction or a real antique tsuba that has been heavily messed with an artificial patina applied.  In either case I wouldn't bother wasting more time on it.

Thanks David,

No problem, No more time shall be wasted and it will be put into the box marked scrap/ruined.

Many thanks

Mark
