I recently acquired a signed mokume-gane tsuba. The only character I've been able translate is what I think is gawa. This is the first mokume-gane tsuba I've come across, let alone a signed tsuba. Any help in translating or information on the tsuba itself would be greatly appreciated.

Perfect guess. I received the message below from Markus Sesko

________

The mei on this tsuba reads:

"Kawagoe ni oite Shigemasa tsukuru" (於川越・重政造) - "Made by Shigemasa in Kawagoe (a fief and town north of Edo)"

_______

Would that be Kitao Shigemasa, the artist, or someone else?
