I recently bought this blade knowing that it was out of polish, BUT, I dont understand why there is not a sharpened edge. The "edge" is actuall about 1mm. thick on the whole blade. The shape of the blade and the 3 mekugi ana made me think it was an older sword. I can make out a hamon on the blade, looks suguha, but the marks left by the first few polishing stones are hiding everything else. What am I missing here.

So would it then be atypical for a better polisher to completely remove the sharpened edge? or is that normal for a badly rusted sword? To clarify my comment, it looks as though a polishing job was started but not completed. If the sword was badly rusted/chipped, would a polisher completely dull the edge to work out the chips or would he polish the blade with the edge sharpened until the chips were gone?

if you recall one of those old John Wayne movies .........he gave a tachi/gunto to his young boy while on leave from the Pacific Front, I assumed the edge had been dulled.

So if they portrait such a scene in the movie, it's conceivable incidents liked that happened quite often.

I remember this picture, Milt, and though it was more than thirty years ago, it was a tachi with a flamboyant koshirae, I remember the boy complaining about his father not bringing him back any war souvenir and JW showing him the tachi...

I am becoming sentimental
