Alex A Posted September 22, 2016 Report Posted September 22, 2016 Two more Muromachi tsuba for sale, this time nice iron examples. I bought these tsuba a while ago whilst studying late Muromachi swords, katate-uchigatana to be more precise. They are simple utilitarian tsuba with simple designs, typically used by low-ranking Samurai during the Sengoku. Any of these would be ideal for someone with a wakizashi/katate-uchigatana looking to create an authentic koshirae of that period or simply enjoy them as they are, two very good 500 year old tsuba. Anyways, the first one. Bought from Elliott Longs well know site and appraised by himself and Robert Haynes. Ko-Katchushi (ca 1500). Mokko shaped iron plate tsuba with six Kiku stamp designs. Each of the Kiku designs is made up of three Kiku. The meaning is endurance, integrity and longevity and displays a feeling of patriotism or traditional aesthestic. Size 7.6 x 7.85 x 0.2 cm (plate) 0.5cm at the rim The early age of this tsuba is confirmed by the ana shape (hangetsu bitsu) and feel of the iron, the rim of Uchikaeshi shows iron bones. A good collectable 500 year old tsuba in good condition, it was priced well above what I ask. Price £295 ono buyer pays paypal fees £7.00 uk delivery £14 overseas delivery Any questions please ask, a donation to NMB if sold. Ive done the pics, please bare with me, pictures took in daylight, I expect my pics will end up super massive again! Alex A Posted September 22, 2016 Author Report Posted September 22, 2016 Tsuba two, another tsuba bought from David Stiles, and again I thank David for saving me the hassle of photography and research, its all done. Katchushi tsuba (Kamon Zu Ko-Sukashi), middle to late Muromachi period. 7.6cm x 7.7cm 2.5mm at the rim. Maru-gata shape. The tsuba is covered with a simple design known as Hari-ishime, done with a steel point. This is interrupted by the Kozuka hitsu-ana indicating the hitsu-ana is a later addition. There are three ko-sukashi designs, all likely family crests. They are Japanese Quince (Mokko), bottle guard (Hyotan) and two parallel cross bars (Futatsu-Hikiryo). The tsuba is covered in remnant lacquer, easily visible through an eye glass. Add to that the patina of the iron and it gives the tsuba a nice dark appearance. Overall, a very nice, and very old tsuba, in very good condition. Price £249 ono, same paypal and postage as the first tsuba. Box not included in sale Donation to NMB if sold, if you have any questions please ask.
