Matt68 Posted July 10, 2016 Report Posted July 10, 2016 Hello, I picked up a Gendaito Katana with the Mei - Echigo Ju Norihisa Saku. This was an unanticipated purchase, I will put it out there that I do not know much about Gendaito smiths. I was trying to do a bit or research and the closest I could find to Norihisa was 3 Mei variants from the Swordsmith index and another Echigo ju ikea Norihisa from a different site. I am only interested to know a bit more information as I purchased it for iaido. I have done some initial research on the web and a katana (maybe from the same smith) I saw on the web for sale was significantly higher in price to what I picked this up for. This has me thinking that maybe I should not use this one for iaido and cutting practice, there are lots of cheep options for this or there is something not quite right. If He a good maker and this katana is "right" I will more than likely sell or trade it to someone who collects Gendaito blades. If not, a cutter I have. If there is further information you would like let me know. I can post more pics but this will not be for a couple of weeks as I will be travelling. Quote
tom Posted July 10, 2016 Report Posted July 10, 2016 Hello, the signature and the hamon of this Norihisa looks not good for me.. Echigo ju ikeda Norihisa is an exellent swordsmith in Japan. The cutting level of his swords are top. He makes only swords with saka choji like Aoe utsuchi. And his blades are expensive. Obata Toshishiro-kaiso and Masayuki Shimabukuro used a sword from Norihisa. Many cutting tester wants to have his sword. Tom Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted July 10, 2016 Report Posted July 10, 2016 Can we see better pictures of the blade itself? I have to disagree that the mei is clunky and not well done at all. Additionally the proportions of nakago length and the blade length looks wrong. This actually looks much like the "gendaito" that is sold frequently on eBay by Komonjo.Could be wrong but given that you want to cut with this it is in your best interest to know what you have before you start swinging it around. Edit: I apologize, I misread and thought Tom said it looked good. Rather than disagreeing, it appears that I am agreeing. Quote
Stephen Posted July 10, 2016 Report Posted July 10, 2016 How long is that nakago? looks disproportionately wrong to nagasa Quote
