AndreasU Posted June 4, 2007 Report Posted June 4, 2007 Hello Community, I have the chance to get a sword for little money but I am unsure about the smith. I tried to translate as best as possible and got this result: Mino ... Minamoto Sada..... Seku So made in Province Mino from Sada...... Saku. Please excuse but this is the first time I try this and hope I am not toooooo wrong! Quote
Rich T Posted June 4, 2007 Report Posted June 4, 2007 Pretty good first effort Andreas. The mei reads Mino no Kami Minamoto Sadatsugu Saku 美濃守源貞継作 Made by Minamoto Sadatsugu, lord of Mino. In the mid 16th century, it became common practice to add official and honorary titles to mei. These were usually in the form of Kami, Daijo and Suke for official titles and Fujiwara, Minamoto, Taira and others for honorary titles. These titles were sometimes handed out by Daimyo and other lords for services rendered, but it is also believed they were sometimes purchased, or given out as bribes. There is some conjecture as to their significance, some say they have varying degrees of importance, others think they are all much of a much ness. So he was not really a lord ( as far as I know) but used the title or it was given to him to use. Cheers Richard Quote
