Christophe Posted November 13, 2012 Report Posted November 13, 2012 I have a pair of menuki I find original and rather uncommon, one of menuki represents a horse face, the other back. I think it is shakudo and manufacturing today. I saw several shakudo tsuba from deep black to light brown. How can we determine if the fitting is in shakudo? and age? Christophe Quote
Ford Hallam Posted November 13, 2012 Report Posted November 13, 2012 Shakudo is black, if it's properly patinated, not badly rubbed and if brown then it's probably copper with some minor alloying addition. These menuki don't look like shakudo to me. The design is after Yokoya Somin (1670–1733), he was the first artist to do a 'full frontal' view of a horse in metal, and the rear view as shown. Probably late Edo/early Meiji period. Definitely not made in the last 60 years. imo. Quote
