The bat symbolizes happiness, as bat in Chinese pronounced 'fu' (蝠), the same sound as 'happiness' (福). So, the overall motif of the tsuba reads 幸福と富貴と長命 or こうふくとふうきとちょうめい in Japanese, or 福祿壽 in Chinese.
