And I do have a question, is it true that Catawiki tells you guys to try anything possible and even refuse items if the seller does not agree to a no reserve price or a very very low reserve? And another question is : how many items do you have to review on a weekly basis and is this number affecting the quality of appraisals?
-
hi Julien, sorry but at a first search on google I could not find anything connecting you and nihonto. The info comes from CW site as you can see in the screenshots. I do not know you indeed and what stroke a bad vibe was the complete unrelatedness of biography with the Japanese blades area of expertise. It could be Catawiki's fault here in which case just deal with them. You can surely see why such a biography description under your name triggered the reaction. Here's another screenshot: I understand this is just a job for you but my honest advice, given the terrible reputation of Catawiki in just about any collectibles area, try to distance yourself from this name, maybe talk to Patrice and see why he left.

Could be but I found zero material on the internet connecting him and blades. That and Catawiki's reputation, you can imagine. There.s no other info on Catawiki about him. To me this is very suspicious. And the short description is highly inapropiate. What.s African art and photography and graphic design got to do with blades? Also, maybe I.m biased but I don.t trust anyone who excels in so many areas, the age of universal leonardinian experts has passed, we do micro specialisation nowdays
-
So Patrice Sabbah, as he promised, left Catawiki Let's see who they brought in instead to appraise blades: Behold Julien Gauthier ! "expert in African Art" "holds fine arts degrees, 15 years as photographer and photo editor in contemporary literature and photobooks" That is all we can find about him on Catawiki site, no link, no other info. Anyone from Catawiki's staff who is constantly browsing this sub could explain what photography/photo editing/ african art has got to do with the complex domain of nihonto appraisals?

I'm sorry to give you such bad news after you already bought it but this is a reproduction, probably early/mid Showa or Taisho. Originals Kanō Tan'yū 狩野 探幽 kakejiku scrolls are selling for thousands of euro in reputable auction houses (Catawiki is a scam) and if I'm not mistaken are prohibited to be exported from Japan Also the photos are not available at CW site, only 5 thumbnail shots so I can't see the signature/seals

So you have a design (print) you like and you want someone to carve a woodblock after it? If it's monochrome then yes it would be a single block but if it's a colorful print can go up to twenty blocks. Carving blocks is a tedious and hard task and would require time, big money and skill. And then another money on the printing process itself. David Bull indeed is a very good suggestion, I'm not sure if he takes orders like that but nonetheless worth asking. If it's a simple design one can learn to carve himself, it's very relaxing and rewarding

wakizashi NBTHK in shirosaya from Europe
sebastian33 replied to alexiss's topic in For Sale or Trade
very tempting indeed, I love it. People are quite fked here in Europe and situation in States is not better. Everybody holds tight to their cash. I'm very tempted! I have a sale waiting to clear through this week and if nobody gets it in a couple of days I think I'll contact you. I live in Romania so shipping will be quickly, we're in lockdown too but customs are working. Nonetheless, nice offer Alexiss! -

Koa Isshin Mantetsu Odd Fittings?
sebastian33 replied to sebastian33's topic in Military Swords of Japan
Hello, I'll make a selling post later tomorrow with pics and video, but for now, as much as I hate it I have to sell the Mantetsu. Lost around 4k in tech stocks these days and have to cover losses. Thanks a lot Trump! However, I'm not letting it go for less than 2200euro. Price is not negociable, do not insist. This is a fine blade, as somebody mentioned earlier, you won't find it any better. -

Koa Isshin Mantetsu Odd Fittings?
sebastian33 replied to sebastian33's topic in Military Swords of Japan
Exactly! Before paying the seller I noticed that and as a begginer, I thought there was something wrong with the authenticity, but further research made it clear it's a fine piece. Bruce, you had it polished&restored? For the guys that wrote me in private inquiring about selling: When I first posted I was thinking about another blade and I was short some 2k. In the meantime , that blade sold, also I posted before actually having the Koa in hand. When I received it I was amazed of how perfect and razor sharp it is, so I'm not planning on selling yet. And even if I were to sell, the price would be in 3 to 4k euro range. For the record I payed 1.8k euro+taxes around 1.95k euro. The seller clearly did not know the value of it. I came across the blade because I practice iaido and occasionally do tameshigiri and heard the perfect cuts that can be achieved with this blade. But if I ever sell it, I will post it first here. -

Thanks a lot for helping a begginer, that was a mind opener. One more question: for getting new papers, an aproximate price and timeline? Or a link to start up the research?
-
Thanks for the info. I'm a begginer in collecting so to understand well: from this : http://new.uniquejapan.com/nbthk-nihon-bijutsu-token-hozon-kyokai-certification-paper-ranking/seems that kicho tokubetsu certificates are from before 1982 system change but still very higly esteemed?
