@Gakusee I think the story behind the Hosokawa Masamune and this Tokuju Masamune tanto is quite different. For the Hosokawa, its no.1 vs no. 2 respected Honami of all time. For this tanto, its 2 of the most respected modern nihonto scholars vs. the nihonto panel that made a “huh?” Attribution from time to time. But now that I think about it, these “huh?”attribution are all Soshu. So you may be right about the difficulties of identifying top Soshu work (or the Soshu knowledge of this panel is not too good).

@eternal_newbie not really, the price that was discussed when it was at Juyo was Tokuju Masamune price.

@Gakusee Regard the TJ Masamune tanto, when you used the word “upgrade it to Masamune” is not entirely correct because at Tokuho, the blade has the paper and the sayagaki by Dr. Honma that attributed it to Masamune. So at Juyo, the current Shinsa team was bold enough to reattributed it to Norishige. The last owner then ask Tanobe Sensei to wrote a sayagaki, in which he attributed to Masamune despite the Juyo paper. So at Tokuju , the Shinsa panel yielded and reverted the attribution back to Masamune. This also resulted in very unique Tokuju paper, where they spent a lot of time saying why its not the other smith rather than just saying why it is that particular smith. So my point is that its not really an upgrade if it was already a Masamune.

Hi Yurie, The list of swords looks awesome. I am very excited, especially that I get to study more Masamune. He is my favorite smith. I am curious though as which Masamune that will be displayed? I am a big fan of Norishige’s work. But, I think this one is not that good (or may be just bad photos). Thats why it is reflected in the price. Normally his really good pieces get snatch up faster than you can blink. This one is on this site who know for how long, but definitely before November, which clearly indicates that its pricing is not attractive.

Hi, Can anyone recomend how to maintain efficently the horimono on your katana? I feel that wiping the oiled cloth along the blade is not sufficent to coat the horimono. I even use cutton bud dipped in oil on the horimono, but still feel it is not working well on the really small horimono. Thank you very much in advance! Peeti

I had such a Kotetsu overload today. I just visit Tokyo National Museum and they have a hugh Kotetsu, probably around 90 cm blade, on display. It was really awesome...
