redryder Posted January 24, 2012 Report Posted January 24, 2012 Can anyone give me any info on this Kozuka? Quote
nagamaki - Franco Posted January 24, 2012 Report Posted January 24, 2012 Greetings, please sign your post as according to NMB rules. What this piece is "trying" to be is a dragonfly with gold wings on a shakudo nanako plate. I say "trying", because it is too difficult to really see the workmanship without better images of front, back, and sides under better lighting. The only 'guess' I would be willing to venture at this point is that the gold appears to be painted on versus other techniques such as an uttori. Age???, whether or not this is true shakudo??? or just a chemically treated black copper is tough to say, but would lean towards the later at this time. fyi, http://www.followingtheironbrush.org/index.php Quote
redryder Posted January 25, 2012 Author Report Posted January 25, 2012 My apologies for not signing my previous posts, Newbie mistake! Just thought I'd add some personal history on this piece. The Kozuka and Kogatana were brought back by my Father in 1946 as part of a Wakazashi, see photo, that I have had dated between 1650 and 1750. He also brought back a Type 38 Arisaka rifle and two Type 30 bayonnets. I will try to get some better photos. I am having trouble getting my camera to work up close even though it has a macro setting. Les Quote
Curran Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 Please show us the tsuba, unmounted, if you have the time. Quote
redryder Posted January 25, 2012 Author Report Posted January 25, 2012 Here is a photo of the Tsuba Quote
nagamaki - Franco Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 Hello Les, As long as you have the camera out, pics of the fuchi kashira and menuki would be welcomed along with a close up of the boshi/kissaki? Thank you. Quote
redryder Posted January 26, 2012 Author Report Posted January 26, 2012 Franco, Here are the photos you asked for. I also included a photo of the inscription on the Kogatana which shows a bit of the cross-hatching on the Kozuka. I just can't get my camera to take a decent pic of the Kozuka. I will try tomorrow to take one outside, maybe that will work better. I also took one of the smooth side of the Kogatana. Quote
nagamaki - Franco Posted January 26, 2012 Report Posted January 26, 2012 thanks for the additional images, an enjoyable set of orginal koshirae. It might be worth asking for and getting a translation for the kogatana .... Quote
redryder Posted January 26, 2012 Author Report Posted January 26, 2012 Franco, does the koshirae give any insight as to the possible origin of the wikizashi? Here is a little bit better photo of the inscription on the kogatana. Any recommendations as to who might be able to translate? Quote
Jean Posted January 26, 2012 Report Posted January 26, 2012 Les, It is wiki pedia and waki zashi Quote
