edzo Posted August 6, 2011 Author Report Posted August 6, 2011 Dear Mr. Bowen, Thanks for the visit and confirmation. This will give me some confidence researching the smith and to study the blade. When i get to a comfort zone, i may post the results of my research on the nihonto forum once i've determined the period/smith and if it is traditionally made. Thank you very much again, Ed F. Quote

cabowen Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 As Jean has been kind enough to post, there are many generations of Soshu Tsunahiro. This line is still active, with the present Tsunahiro working in Kamakura. I believe he claims to be the 23rd or 24th generation Masamune (don't recall exactly). You most likely will have a difficult time narrowing down this signature to the exact generation.... For what it is worth, it looks late, rather than early, to me.... Quote
Jacques Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 Hi, From Fujishiro (more reliable than Shoshin) TSUNAHIRO SHODAI [TENMON 1532 SAGAMI] SUEKOTÔ JÔSAKU His family name is Yamamura, and in the beginning his mei was Masahiro. He was later beckoned by Hôjô Ujitsuna of Odawara, was granted the use of one kanji, and changed his signature to Tsunahiro. His legal name was the Gô of Tsuramuki and is said to have been granted the title of Taima no Kami, but this is not clear. His works have horimono of kenmakiryû, bonji, suken nado, hamon is midare ha or hitatsura ha. (Ryôwazamono) Signature: SÔSHÛ JÛ TSUNAHIRO SAKU TSUNAHIRO SÔSHÛ NIDAI [EIROKU 1558 SAGAMI] SUEKOTÔ JÔSAKU His family name is Yamamura, he is called Taima, legal name was the Gô of Munemoto. His works are predominantly wakizashi, hamon has midareba, hitatsura, suguba nado, and has horimono of kenmakiryû and kusa no kurikara. Signature: SÔSHÛ JÛ TSUNAHIRO According to a genealogy chart of the house of Yamamura and old documents, a change of ownership between the first and second generations can be seen between Tenmon 7 to 10 and there is a theory that these old documents are not accurate, and that the first and second generation are the same person, but they are written according to an outline of Yamamura family documents. TSUNAHIRO SÔSHÛ SANDAI [bUNROKU 1592 SAGAMI] SUEKOTÔ JÔSAKU He is called Yamamura Souemonnojô, and lived in Kamakura Ôgigaya. Later, at the beckoning of the Lord of the Tsugaru Han he moved, and mad_ three hundred daishô katana. He finished this enterprise in Keichô 11 and returned to his home kuni. His works are many, hamon is midare ha, hitatsura and suguba ko-midare ha, and there are also horimono. He died on the 27th day of the second month of 9th year of Kan'ei, at the age of 91. Signatures: TSUNAHIRO SÔSHÛ JÛ TSUNAHIRO TSUNAHIRO SÔSHÛ YONDAI [KAN'EI 1624 SAGAMI] SHINTÔ CHÛJÔSAKU He is called Jinbei no Jô. Signature: SÔSHÛ JÛ TSUNAHIRO TSUNAHIRO ISE NO DAIJÔ [MANJI 1658 SAGAMI] SHINTÔ JÔSAKU He is the godai Tsunahiro, and he received the title of Ise no Daijô during the Manji years. According to one story, Nagasone Okisato was a pupil of this Tsunahiro. His works are sugu ashi iri, gonome ko-midare, the ji is ko-moku, and no further traces of the Sôshû Den are seen. This can probably be said to be the influence of the times. There are deeply carved horimono such as Fudôson. (Wazamono) Signatures: SÔSHÛ JÛ TSUNAHIRO SÔSHÛ ISE NO DAIJÔ MINAMOTO TSUNAHIRO Plate III: SÔSHÛ ISE NO DAIJÔ MINAMOTO TSUNAHIRO Many of the works of shintô Tsunahiro are excellent. He died on Genroku Jûichinen (1698) Sangatsu Jûsannichi at the age of 83. TSUNAHIRO SÔSHÛ ROKUDAI [GENROKU 1688 SAGAMI] SHINTÔ CHÛJÔSAKU He is called Uemonnojô. Signature: SÔSHÛ JÛ TSUNAHIRO TSUNAHIRO UHEI [TENMEI 1781 SAGAMI] SHINSHINTÔ CHÛJÔSAKU He is the tenth generation Tsunahiro, and is called Yamamura Uhei. He died on Kansei Sannen (1790) Shichigatsu Futsuka (7/20). Even though there is a book which says that he was in the Suishinshi Masahide Mon, conversely, he was probably the teacher of Masahide. Signature: SÔSHÛ JÛ TSUNAHIRO TSUNAHIRO JÛICHIDAI [KANSEI 1789 SAGAMI] SHINSHINTÔ CHÛJÔSAKU He is called Uhei, and he died on Kyôwa Gannen (1801) Shichigatsu Kokonoka (7/9). Because his life was short, no works which are of a certainty his have been seen. Signature: SÔSHÛ JÛ TSUNAHIRO TSUNAHIRO KANZAEMON [bUNKA 1804 SAGAMI] SHINSHINTÔ CHÛJÔSAKU He is the twelfth generation Tsunahiro, and this smith was in the Suishinshi Masahide Mon. This was an opportunity for a revival of the old (swords), and he tempered with the hitatsura and midareba of the Sôshû Den. Even though the ji is ô-itame hada, the feeling of the shinshintô is strong in both the ji and ha. He died on Tenpô Gannen (1830) Jûgatsu Nanoka (10/7), and occasionally horimono he himself made are seen. Signatures: SAGAMI KUNI TSUNAHIRO TSUNAHIRO TSUKURI MASAMUNE SUE MAGO SAGAMI KUNI TSUNAHIRO "MASAMUNE SUE MAGO" means "the last descendant of Masamune" He liked to do engraving, and excellent works are seen. TSUNAHIRO JÛSANDAI [bUNKYÛ 1861 SAGAMI] SHINSHINTÔ CHÛJÔSAKU He is called Yamamura Sôsaburô, and he died on Meiji Jûkyûnen (1886) Sangatsu Nijûkunichi (3/29). I wonder if this smith also became a pupil of Masahide? [TN] Signatures: SÔSHÛ JÛ TSUNAHIRO MASAMUNE JÛKYÛDAI MAGO TSUNAHIRO, Nineteenth generation of Masamune. TSUNAHIRO JÛYONDAI [MEIJI 1868 SAGAMI] SHINSHINTÔ CHÛSAKU His works are few, he is called Yamamura Shigenojô, and he died on Taishô Gannen Jûnigatsu Jûgonichi (12/15). [TN] Signature: MASAMUNE NIJÛDAI MAGO TSUNAHIRO, Twentieth generation grandson of Masamune. TSUNAHIRO ÔMI NO KAMI [ENPÔ 1673 YAMASHIRO] SHINTÔ CHÛJÔSAKU He also lived in Ise, and I wonder if he is in the Sôshû Tsunahiro line? Signatures: YAMASHIRO KUNI JÛ MINAMOTO TSUNAHIRO ÔMI NO KAMI FUJIWARA TSUNAHIRO TSUNAHIRO ÔMI NO KAMI MINAMOTO TSUNAHIRO Quote

I'm sure that this will be a great start and lead moving forward with my study. Though, I a little intimidated, my effort will be tenacious as soon as I unpack the blade.
