Hi all. I'm new to the board and to Japanese swords as well. I recently purchased a sword from eBay. Admittedly I did not do a huge amount of research before purchasing it but hopefully enough for me to properly ascertain that it is genuine.

I'd like to ask for people knowledgeable in Japanese WWII era swords take a look at the pictures and provide their honest opinions on them. As I'm excited about my purchase any information provided here is a stop gap measure until my first book on the subject has been delivered (Military Swords of Japan 1868-1945) and I can do some serious reading :-). I'd also very much appreciate a translation of the mei - am happy to post this to the translation area of the board if needed.

I attempted a translation of the date and I think it says Showa, 1935. Not sure of the month. Also, I've tried to find a match for the stamp or whatever that symbol is above the date - it might be Seki? But it doesn't seem to quite match. There also appears to be another stamp on the other side, which seems to be obscured by some rust, but I don't have a decent photo of that yet.

It's possible that the pictures I have taken may not be of suitable quality and I'll be happy to redo any images as requested. I will be attempting to get some better pics of the blade as I did have some trouble.

The item was advertised as:

- Type 3 Shin-Gunto

- Tight itame hada

- Hamon is straight suguha

- ko-maru boshi

I appreciate any assistance anybody can offer. Thanks.

Thanks, Bruno.

I took another photo of the signature and have put the link in my first post. Hopefully this makes it clearer.

Again, thanks for your time.

Kanetsugu....there was a Maegawa Kanetsugu working as a Seki Kaji in WWII (personal name Genichi). Started there 26 Oct 1939....I think this is him. Tsugu character is very roughly cut.

Regards,

George.
