I am a German WWII sword/knife collector for 20+ years, but have been wanting to learn more about Japanese swords (not an easy task) and this is my first attempt at collecting (probably poorly). I purchased this blade but it probably is not worth restoring and I was just looking for any comments or information. Thanks for your response.

Normally I'd recommend using a lot of uchiko to knock back the rust and bring out some of the activity, but this blade has been so thoroughly raked with large grit sandpaper that I doubt mere uchiko will do much to clarify the situation. I'm guessing it needs a window opened to see what's there. Sigh.

If it is still for sale - I'd pass - the photos indicate a very badly treated blade and a taped up saya - if not and you own it I am not even sure I would spend the money to open a window on a mumei wak looking this battered :dunno:
